Simple Dal (Lentil Curry)

Ingredients (Serves 3-4)

  • 1 cup dry lentils (toor dal or masoor dal)
  • 3 cups water
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp salt (or to taste)

Tadka (optional but traditional):

  • 1 tbsp oil or ghee
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 dried red chili (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the dal until water runs clear.
  2. Add dal, water, turmeric, and salt to a pot or pressure cooker.
  3. Cook until soft
    • Pressure cooker: 3-4 whistles
    • Pot: 25-30 minutes
  4. Mash lightly for a smooth texture.
  5. Heat oil/ghee in a small pan. Add cumin, garlic, onion, and chili.
  6. Cook until golden, then pour the tadka over the dal.
  7. Simmer 2-3 minutes and serve hot.
