Simple Dal (Lentil Curry)
Ingredients (Serves 3-4)
- 1 cup dry lentils (toor dal or masoor dal)
- 3 cups water
- ½ tsp turmeric
- ½ tsp salt (or to taste)
Tadka (optional but traditional):
- 1 tbsp oil or ghee
- ½ tsp cumin seeds
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 dried red chili (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse the dal until water runs clear.
- Add dal, water, turmeric, and salt to a pot or pressure cooker.
- Cook until soft
- Pressure cooker: 3-4 whistles
- Pot: 25-30 minutes
- Mash lightly for a smooth texture.
- Heat oil/ghee in a small pan. Add cumin, garlic, onion, and chili.
- Cook until golden, then pour the tadka over the dal.
- Simmer 2-3 minutes and serve hot.
